Ginger: A Total-Scale Analysis of the Scientific Literature on a Widely Used Spice and Phytotherapeutic

Ginger is one of the most consumed spices and a traditional remedy with an exceptionally high number of health-related benefits; however, what do we know about the scientific basis supporting this? A recent scientific study did a critical analysis of scientific literature on ginger. It applied advanced bibliometric techniques whereby data from a global database of publications were used to identify trends in research activity, frequently studied topics, key contributors, and leading journals. The authors found that interest in research into ginger has increased greatly from the mid-2000s onwards on its bioactive principles, like gingerols and shogaols, which are responsible for its medicinal attributes. The review thus serves as a roadmap for navigating ginger’s various roles in health and highlights the existing knowledge gaps in current research.
