Recent progress in the evaluation of secondary metabolites from Basidiomycota

Abstract

The current review summarizes new reports of biologically active secondary metabolites that were reported during the past five years from Basidiomycota. These organisms are still underexplored and predominantly produce terpenoids and meroterpenoids; however, polyketides, alkaloids and other nitrogen-containing metabolites are also commonly encountered. A particularly high number of novel compounds have been reported from African and Asian species, while almost no new records from American Basidiomycota and only a few from European mushrooms were published. In total, over 350 new metabolites were recorded.
