University Professor of PHARMACOGNOSY

The University of Innsbruck invites applications for the position of a


University Professor




at the Institute of Pharmacy, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy.


It is a position in accordance with § 98 of the Austrian Universities’ Act (Universitätsgesetz – UG) and will be based on a civil-law employment contract with the University on the basis of the Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz). The contract will be concluded for an unlimited period; the extent of employment is 100%.



Responsibilities include


The chair-holder is to represent the subject of “Pharmacognosy” or “Pharmaceutical Biology” in its entirety, both in research and teaching, with a focus on the isolation and characterization of pharmacologically active natural substances.


It is expected that the professorship will set new research priorities and establish innovative research approaches, which will allow the faculty to establish new key research areas, among others via cross-faculty and/or cross-university collaborations. The research area should tie in with one or more of the cross-faculty focal points of the faculty or the “Centre for Molecular Biosciences Innsbruck (CMBI)”. This includes, but is not limited to, the molecular basis of (patho)physiological processes and their modulation by active substances.


Close collaborations or the willingness to cooperate with the other pharmaceutical core subjects (pharmacology, pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical pharmacy), chemistry and related research fields of the university, and the Michael Popp Research Institute (“Phytopharmacology” and “Plant Biotechnology”) are highly welcome.


In teaching, the newly appointed professor shall cover the subject “Pharmacognosy” in the relevant courses offered by the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, and supervise bachelor theses, master theses and dissertations.


Personal involvement is expected in academic administration and self-governance as well as in working groups of the institute and faculty.



Employment Requirements include


  1. a degree in higher education in Austria or the equivalent abroad, pertinent to the position;
  2. pertinent habilitation or comparable qualification;
  3. outstanding scientific qualifications in research in the field of pharmacognosy/pharmaceutical biology, proven by publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals;
  4. evidence of involvement in international research and subject-related experience abroad;
  5. interdisciplinary experimental work in natural compounds research, preferably in the field of pharmacologically active substances;
  6. experience in raising third-party funding;
  7. pronounced didactic skills and proven teaching experience;
  8. evidence of the successful management of a working group;
  9. the ability to teach in German and English.
